Unemployment, Recession - How Do We Get Through It?

Most of us are experiencing this. With unemployment rates on the rise, experts predict the unemployment rates will be in the double digits by this summer. So, what do we do? How do we survive this tough economy? First, let me tell you, we will survive. Each generation has gone through this. Just ask your grandparents about the great depression. Or, ask your parents about the late 70's to early 80's. They've been through it, they survived. Now is not the time to isolate yourself and worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will take care of itself. Above all things, you need to keep a positive mental attitude. Remember those days sitting at your desk pondering all the things you want to do but can't because there is no time? Well, now there is time! Go visit that museum, go hang out with friends, take that class on gourmet cooking. The important thing is that you keep your brain active. Learn new skills. Who knows, volunteering at the local food bank just may turn into a new career. Be careful though, unemployment offices will consider volunteer work a reason to disqualify you for unemployment. Find out their specific rules and guidelines first. Learn that new software program you never had time to learn. There are numerous tutorials online. Everything you do is a new skill set that can branch off into a new career.

Now is the time to update your resume. Do not keep it generic, be specific. If you were an office assistant, don't just put the basic duties. For example, if you planned a seminar, invited guest speakers, created fliers and invitations, created name badges, etc. Then, by all means, add on your resume: Planned and hosted a successful seminar that brought potential clients to our Company. Think outside the box. Think of every little minute task you performed that was to the companies benefit.

Thinking of going back to school? Now is the time! You have nothing but time on your hands and the government is giving out excess in school grants. There are also supplemental loans to get you by while attending school.

What is your fear? You will lose your good credit? Let me tell you this, you may be set back 2 years, but deal with it. In 2 years time your credit will be back in good standing. Most people are sympathetic to debt created by recession, illness, etc. So you have to do without the luxuries of credit right now, but honestly, what good is your credit if you have no income to back it up? Don't get caught in the credit trap that millions are experiencing right now. Many are paying their mortgages with their credit cards. Eventually, it all has to be paid, so their just putting off the inevitable.

Have to walk away from your home and possessions? Hard as it may be, this is happening to many. It has happened before. Learning to let go of your possessions is the first step. Downsize to a small apartment, do what you need to to get by. Remember, this is only temporary. In a few years you will probably have a home better than the one you had before. All of your possessions are replaceable.

If you have kids, make arrangements with family. Who can take care of them while you strive to get back on your feet? Remember, once again, this is temporary.

So many of us get caught up in identifying ourselves by our jobs. "I am an Escrow Officer, I am an IT Tech", etc. Get rid of those labels. You are no better than the person flipping burgers at McDonalds. We are all human beings and we are in this together. Humbling as it may be, sometimes we just need to experience this. All in all, the point to remember is that this is temporary, we will get through this. History proves this!

There are great websites out there that help. I came across the website: "hillbilly housewives". I was wondering how to make my food dollars stretch. They have a nutritious menu with recipes and ingredients that tells you how to feed a family of 6 for $45 a week! Can't beat that! Browse the web, you will find many resources to help you through.
I myself have been out of work for a year now, were all in this together!
